iPipe Services were engaged to complete an emergency response project in the Surat Basin. The work was necessary because a 450mm diameter isolation valve was affecting production rates due to its reduced diameter, compared to the 630mm pipeline it was installed in.
The restriction was causing higher gas velocities through the valve, increasing the risk to its integrity due to erosion of the casing. If left unrepaired, the valve could have caused a gas leak.
There were two options to fix the valve, but neither were ideal due to capital costs and loss of gas production, so the iPipe Services team worked to create a more effective solution which would mean reduce production down time and mean limited capital costs.
iPipe Services used specialised clamping tools to perform a squeeze off. The procedure allows the operator to isolate the working section of the pipe under pressure to enable the valve cut out and to be replaced with minimum gas production and capital cost.
No-one else has the certified capability to perform a squeeze off at large diameters – iPipe Services has the necessary certified equipment, procedures and qualified personnel to complete the work.
Our motivation for innovating the squeeze off technology is that the available options are expensive and there has been a move to large bore HDPE more frequently in the CSG industry. The idea of the squeeze off has been around for a while, but through further research and development of the technology we have expanded the idea to large pipe work (i.e. 630mm and above).
